Mugai Ryu is a Koryo - that is, a classical Japanese martial art as studied by the Samurai, and using the katana - a Samurai sword.
Zen-inspired, it is truly still and calm. "It's bit like the tea ceremony but with sharper instruments," says Neil R. Hall, one of our Founders, who is a student of the art and teaches it in Worcestershire.
Mugai Ryu has only recently begun to be taught in the UK, just as it is taught in Japan, and something has proved very striking (excuse the pun): lots of the people who do it are.....erm..... mature. Quite a few of the students took it up in their 60s and 70s. It is great gentle exercise, and you don't have to run around or jump about. It has all the traditional of martial arts, and all the calm and relaxation of Tai Chi, yet classes are filled with fun and laughter, and nobody feels too old or too silly. Men and women do it, and for those who don't mind both parties having a sword around, couples can do it together.
In this fun, calm and insightful workshop, Neil R. Hall and his colleagues introduce you to the art, and give you a chance to have a go (with a wooden sword, just till you have had a bit more practice). You don't need any equipment as it will all be provided. Just come as you are.
